The gulf between Iran and Arabia has two names in active use
"Persian Gulf" is the name used for millennia and recognized as standard by the UN. "Arabian Gulf" is what Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and other Gulf states call it in their own official use. Both are live today.
Persian Gulf
Documented under this name since antiquity — ancient Greek geographers called it "Sinus Persicus." The United Nations and most international bodies still treat it as the standard name today.
Arabian Gulf
Promoted since the 1960s and '70s, alongside a wave of pan-Arab nationalism, and now the name used in official government communications, media, and maps from several Arab Gulf states.
The dispute periodically spills into everyday products. Companies, publishers, and media outlets that use one name over the other have faced formal complaints and public backlash from the other side — including a well-publicized 2004 incident when National Geographic added "Arabian Gulf" as a secondary label and was met with an Iranian ban on its staff entering the country.
Most international maps and reference works still default to "Persian Gulf" as the primary name, while government sources from Gulf Arab states use "Arabian Gulf" exclusively.
