California has the most college basketball teams. Texas sent the most to March Madness.

California has more Division I basketball programs than any other state — 26 of them. But it only landed four bids in the 68-team field, the same as Ohio, Florida, and New York. Texas, with fewer programs (22), sent seven teams to the Dance — more than anywhere else.

Sending the most teams doesn't buy the deepest run, either. All seven of Texas's teams were gone by the Sweet 16. North Carolina sent five, including 1-seed Duke; only Duke made it past the first weekend, reaching the Elite Eight before a 73–72 loss to UConn. Michigan — a state with just seven Division I programs and two tournament bids — won the whole thing.
